Medical system
Hey there.
As you heard I met an old wall on our tour. Surprisingly the wall wasn't as nice as the Scottish people but what would you expect when someone bumps into you without any warnings. Rude Germans :) After stopping and getting a bandage on the knee, we stopped the first car and asked them to take me to the next hospital or something like that. Nora drove with her scooter behind us while I was sitting in the backseat. You have to love the Scottish people, after hearing the stories about our trip and the problems the old lady in the car just said to me with a smile "Don't worry, that is all life experience" We then arrived at a little building where they dropped me off and drove away.
It was something like an emergency station with one paramedic and boy, that paramedic was one of a kind. After we explained the situation he said we should go around the building and wait for him. We did and were a little surprised when no one was there…
but after 5 minutes the gate opened and the paramedic drove his car out. Why? The treatment room is in a separate building, yay! When he wanted to drive there I asked him if I could drive with him there. After a few seconds of starring into nothing he answered "Yes" and made space for me on a seat. Maybe he was sleeping when we arrived but he wasn't really awake for sure. We then arrived at the new building.
Lying on the treatment couch he opened the bandage and took a look at the wound but not without hitting me with the lamp first which he didn't fix correctly. While pressing at the wound it started to bleed and it ran down my foot. And here my favorite paramedic demonstrated or rather defined the term calm entirely new. While bleeding, he slowly went to a desk, took out a white paper and asked "Your name and address, please" Having eye contact that moment I guess Nora and me had the same thought "What?"
After writing down my contact details he started to search stuff for the treatment. And guys when I say search I really mean it that way. Opening one cabinet door after another just to find out that there was not stuff in it, leaving the room to come back with other stuff and so it took him a while to get everything, it didn't make it faster that he dropped the scissors but in the end he had everything
From that point on he seemed to be more awake and my first concerns faded away.
He fixed me up and gave us the tip to have a look at a pillar that was used in the movie "The Da Vinci Code". That was my first experience with the medical system in Scotland and here again you have to love them as the treatment was free.
Back again with some insight into the medical system in England. 5 days after the accident my knee and everything below took some funny colors, well you can expect that. The swelling and the gum consistence at my calf wasn't, so Hospital was on the agenda for today. Moprü volunteered to come with me, despite the early hours for him :-P. Thank you again :-)
After arriving my contact details were written down and I now live in the wonderful city of Lonstanz. Never heard of it? Don’t worry. Me neither and I live in it :D really wondering if I ever get anything from that Hospital ;-) the examination was as the one before unique. As for the infected wound I got Antibiotics. Now the first main difference to Germany. They took my blood. No not that one but without disinfection??? My hope is they thought "well he gets Antibiotics anyway, so it doesn't really matter" rather than forgetting it. Her notes were taken on paper which you know from toilets to dry your hands. You see a very professional way :-) but what would you expect from people who measure the diameter of your calf with an IKEA measuring tape?? Not kidding saw the IKEA text. Maybe advertising? Well doesn't matter. What is good for a company handling millions of costumers is good enough for the English medical System, in fact, both are handling customers ;-)
Moprü was waiting all the time and he still could laugh when I visited him on the way to the x-ray in a coat, you know the ones that are open in the back. X-ray is the same as in Germany but they don't care about the protective apron. At the ultra sound they had a discussion about the bandage from the A&E. They had to remove it for the test but it was quite a problem for them. End of the story was that it is obviously the job of the A&E to put them on and not theirs, so what to do???? A genius idea from the assistant. Cut it open at the back just enough for the test and tape it afterwards. Technically it's not removing, so all decided that's the way to go :-) 5mim discussion about a bandage :-D after 3.5 hours of waiting for the doctor the only thing was an infected wound and nothing more. Thank god :-) we then drove at rush-hour back to John the first where the others waited :-)
Back in Germany I went to the hospital and wished to be back in Scotland. When asking the lady at the store to change money for the parking area she send me away to someone else as it is not her job… The good thing is while waiting for my doctor I had time to write this blog entry...
